40% of organic milk sold as conventional

Lactalis sells up to 40% of its organic milk pool s normal milk. Other large French dairies are taking a similar approach. They are downgrading organic milk in terms of both price and utilisation, French media report.

Due to a lack of sales opportunities, organic milk is coming under pressure and is being “downgraded”, reports the French media portal Basta! Specifically, the large dairies that collect organic and conventional milk from farmers are filling the milk into the same tank.

This apparently happens because there is no longer enough demand from consumers. Consumer demand for organic milk has fallen by about 10 percent . Nevertheless, annual production continues to rise and recently reached 250 m litres per year.
