Cremo and Emmi prepare for gas shortage

Swiss milk processors Cremo and Emmi believe they are prepared for a gas shortage, even if they may have to cut production.

At Cremo in Fribourg, natural gas accounts for about half of the total energy consumption, at Emmi it is about 46 per cent. However, Cremo could switch to heating oil and ensure full production, according to Secretary General Thomas Zwald. If there is not enough gas available, the heating systems at Emmi would have to be switched to oil or liquid gas or throttled back, says Emmi spokeswoman Simone Burgener. But then less milk could be processed.

Emmi and Cremo want to move away from fossil fuels. Cremo gets 20 per cent of its energy consumption from district heating. Emmi is increasingly relying on woodchip and photovoltaic plants as well as district heating from waste incineration plants.
