Limited growth potential for organic milk in France

Date: 30.06.2021Source: web-agri

Although the turnover of the French organic milk sector is still increasing, organic milk producers are facing new challenges as the balance between supply and demand tends to reverse and there is an increasing supply of conventional milk competing with them.

In 2020, 1.1 billion litres of organic milk were collected in France, i.e. 4.6% of the total milk volume. In 2021, this figure is expected to reach 1.2 billion litres, or 5% of the national milk collection. Sales of organic dairy products are at one billion euros, but growth in consumption is slowing down and several dairies have stopped further conversion.

50% of organic product purchases will be made by 15% of consumers, who will not necessarily buy more. To increase the volume of sales, new consumers have to be found. But this will not be an easy task, because the conventional offer is also improving and now offers guarantees about the origin of the milk, but also of the animal feed, transparency in the chain, grazing time, sustainability, etc.
