In 2019, more than 3 billion litres of ice cream were produced in the European Union, an increase of 6% over the previous year. Ice cream producers exported 222,000 tons to third countries for a total of €723m. Imports of ice cream from countries outside the European Union amounted to 82,000 tons for a total value of €180 m.
Within the European Union, Germany was the most important ice cream producer with a production of 635m litres of ice cream in 2019. Italy followed with 554m litres and France with 451m litres. France exported a total of 55,000 tons of ice cream to countries outside the European Union in 2019. The Netherlands followed with 35,000 tons.
The United Kingdom was the main destination for ice cream exports to countries outside the European Union. In 2019, 128,000 tons of ice cream went there.
