Consensus among institutional investors

The financial derivatives markets in New Zealand have reached a historic milestone in price formation, as the SGX-NZX milk price futures contracts have exceeded the benchmark threshold of $10 per kilogram of milk solids for three consecutive milking years. Trading activity in futures contracts for the 2026–2027, 2027–2028 and 2028–2029 seasons reflects the industry’s strong confidence in the resilience of milk prices. For the 2026–2027 season, derivatives prices have risen to over $10.05, placing them well above the current average figures of $9.50 in the cooperatives’ baseline forecasts

Market participants traded hundreds of futures contracts representing millions of kilograms of milk ingredients, underscoring the consensus among institutional investors that tight global milk supplies and strong demand from Asia will underpin high returns over an extended cycle.
