EU Commission cuts farm budget by almost 25%

The EU Commission intends to plan €302 billion for the agricultural sector in the 2028 to 2034 budget, which is €90 billion less than before. Agricultural businesses could lose 20% or more of their direct payments. If the EU Commission has its way, the member states will be able to call up further funds for agriculture. In contrast to the current budget, the EU Commission wants to give the Member States more freedom in how they use EU funds.
Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen described the reserved 302 billion euros as the minimum amount that member states will receive for agriculture. The EU Commission no longer envisages a separate agricultural budget. It wants to combine the money from the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in a fund with other policy areas. For the period 2028 – 2034, it wants to establish a “European Fund for Sustainable Prosperity and Security” with a volume of €865 billion.
