Greek dairy company Fage has unveiled new plans for a yoghurt factory in Hoogeveen. The first phase of the new plant is due to start operations in early 2029.
The factory, which will produce Greek-style yoghurt, is to be built in the Riegmeer industrial estate in the municipality of Hoogeveen. Previous plans failed due to the high levels of gas and water consumption that were expected. It has now been decided to power the factory with electricity. A new TenneT substation in Riegmeer is due to be completed by the end of 2028, enabling the regional grid operator Rendo to supply the electricity. Water consumption has been reduced by 90% in the plans, and the factory will treat the water itself.
From the perspective of established competitors, it remains to be seen how the entry of a new milk purchaser will affect the Dutch dairy industry.
