With Christmas coming up soon, member dairy farmers of FrieslandCampina will visit 150 care homes to treat over 20,000 elderly people and their health care professionals to Chocomel with whipped cream on 18 December.
Said dairy farmer Niels Wassenaar: “They particularly deserve this token of attention in this for many people difficult and lonely period.” Last Tuesday, he handed out Chocomel in a care home in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. Today, member dairy farmers will visit care homes throughout the Netherlands.
The idea to cheer up the care homes with a winter treat came from dairy farmer Edwin Sengers from Wijchen, the Netherlands. Last year, he organised the campaign to visit vulnerable and less mobile elderly people and bring them something nice ‘from the own shed’. At that time, he and his fellow dairy farmers visited several care homes to treat 1,200 elderly people and have a chat with them. This was highly appreciated. The many positive reactions he received from the elderly people in response to this made him enthusiastic and this year, a large group of fellow dairy farmers organised a broader campaign during which 150 care homes will be visited on 18 December.
Added Wassenaar: “The restrictions because of corona particularly hit the elderly people. They deserve attention and warmth especially in this Christmas period. We would really love to hand out the hot Chocomel with whipped cream ourselves and together with the elderly enjoy this treat while sitting around the table having a nice talk about former and present times, listening to their stories and telling them about farm life. Unfortunately, that is not possible this year. This does not mean, however, that there will be no treat this year. On the contrary. Many fellow dairy farmers will with a lot of enthusiasm go to care homes and hand over Chocomel and Campina whipped cream on 18 December.
