Russian scientists are developing a new type of coronavirus vaccine that can be taken via a fermented milk product. It affects the spike protein with which SARS-CoV-2 infects healthy cells. This was announced by the Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vladimir Chekhonin, at an online meeting of the Academy’s Presidium.
According to Chekhonin, the vaccine is being developed by scientists from the Institute of Experimental Medicine (IEM, Saint Petersburg). It is a vaccine that is brought into the body through the mouth in the form of aerosols or slightly larger drops. The vectors are probiotic bacteria with a cloned immunogenic viral protein on their surface villi, which is responsible for the hoped-for immunisation.
