South Korea: Liquid milk consumption declining

Last year, liquid milk consumption per capita fell 9.5 percent on year to 22.9 kilograms, the lowest rate in four decades, according to the Korea Dairy Committee. Industry observers attribute the decline to factors such as Korea’s low birthrate, the rise of single-person households and growing demand for alternative beverages. Consumer preferences have also shifted away from plain milk toward processed dairy.

The price of 2 percent milk in Korea stood at $3.42 per liter as of January, the third-highest among 78 surveyed countries, according to price comparison site GlobalProductPrices.com.
