The ongoing heatwave and lack of rain in Austria are threatening the agricultural sector. Financial bailouts will not resolve the root causes of the crisis. Greenpeace and IG Milch (the Association of Austrian Grassland and Cattle Farmers) have called on Environment Minister Norbert Totschnig to end his “policy of obstruction on climate and nature conservation”, to draft an “effective climate law” and to implement the EU’s Nature Restoration Regulation without delay. Without intact natural environments and functioning water reservoirs in the soil, local food production will collapse, according to the two organisations.
