The ALDI SÜD Group is giving a major boost to Europe’s plant-based food system by co-signing the ‘Partners for Plant-Based’ declaration for its European countries.
Said Thomas Schobesberger, Secretary General of the European Alliance for Plant-based Foods: “ALDI SÜD is sending a strong signal that plant-based foods are not only good for people and the planet. They are also an economically viable, strategic asset of the European food value chain, bringing sustainability to the supermarket shelf. With a dedicated EU Plant-Based Foods Value Chain Action Plan and an ambitious EU Protein Strategy, the EU can boost farmer incomes, cut emissions, create quality jobs and strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy, all while expanding consumer choice and improving public health.”
In contrast to recent efforts to introduce unfair and unnecessary labelling regulations, this is exactly the kind of collaboration and cross-sectoral engagement that the European food system needs. Farmers, suppliers, industry networks, research institutions and retailers, united behind a shared vision to make food systems in Europe more competitive, sustainable and resilient. Simply put: more plant-based.
The Partners for Plant-Based initiative is coordinated by four leading European food business associations: the European Vegetable Protein Association (EUVEPRO), Plant-Based Foods Europe (PBFE), Starch Europe and the European Alliance for Plant-Based Foods (EAPF). Together with the co-signatories, they call on EU policymakers to develop an EU-wide plant-based food value chain action plan and protein strategy to strengthen the competitiveness, sustainability and resilience of Europe’s food system.
