FrieslandCampina holds the exclusive trademark rights in the Benelux countries to a specific shade of yellow for the packaging of chocolate milk products under the Chocomel brand. This follows a decision by the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property in The Hague in proceedings brought by the dairy group against the Spanish company Grupo Cacaolat.

In 2025, Grupo Cacaolat filed a trade mark application in the Benelux countries for the trade mark ‘Chocolat’. The company intended to use the same shade of yellow on its packaging as FrieslandCampina uses for Chocomel. FrieslandCampina lodged an opposition on the grounds that the Spanish company would thereby gain an unfair advantage from the established reputation and recognisability of Chocomel.
