Feta at the heart of US-EU dispute

Feta is at the centre of a dispute between the European Union and the United States. At the end of April, Jamieson Greer, US Trade Representative since February 2025, published a series of posts on the office’s official X account entitled ‘The 10 craziest foreign trade barriers US exporters face’.

Feta ranks tenth on this list, drawing the ire of the Office of the US Trade Representative: “Within the European Union, the term ‘Feta’ may only be used for cheese produced in Greece, as the EU claims that certain cheese names are linked to specific places in Europe”.

Based on this rule, the Office of the US Trade Representative goes on to state: “There is no specific place in Europe called ‘Feta’! And the EU is forcing other countries to follow this absurd rule. This excludes US producers from the market simply because they use certain types of cheese.”
