As shown by the latest figures from the Statistical Service of the Ministry of Agriculture in Paris (Agreste), the total number of farms with at least ten cows has fallen by around 14.7 per cent over the past ten years. In 2015, this herd still numbered around 7.5m cows; by 2025, the figure had fallen to just 6.4m. According to the statisticians, the herd declined by an average of 1.6 per cent per year during this period. The dairy herd was reduced by 15.9 per cent during the reporting period. Of the farmers active in this sector in 2015, 27.7 per cent of dairy farmers had ceased operations ten years later.
