Danone are bringing the Eco-Score label on products of their Danone and Alpro brand in cooperation with retailer Colruyt Group. Just like the Nutri score, the Eco score is displayed via letter and color codes. This goes from A and green for products with a low impact to E and red for products that have a heavy impact on the environment. The score is based on a life cycle analysis in which, for example, the type of packaging and the origin of ingredients are also taken into account.
The methodology of the Eco-score is scientifically based and was developed in France in 2021. Not much later that year, Colruyt Group launched this Eco-score in Belgium. In November last year, the supermarket group also launched a savings program around the Eco score. Customers can collect points by buying products with Eco-scores A and B. Through collaboration with local partners, cunsumers can then use those points to plant a tree or create a flower meadow, for example.
